Flagstaff is a city nestled in Northern Arizona. A popular attraction here is the Walnut Canyon National Monument. It is a United States National Monument located about ten miles southeast of downtown Flagstaff, just off Interstate 40. The canyon rim lies at six thousand six hundred and ninety feet; the canyon’s floor is three hundred and fifty feet lower. A 0.9 mile long loop trail descends one hundred and eighty five feet into the canyon passing twenty five cliff dwelling rooms constructed by the Sinagua people. Most of the cliff dwelling rooms are found near the loop trail, typically slightly above the trail and immediately outside the loop itself. A typical room might have been the dwelling of a single family, and might measure about two meters high by six meters long by three meters deep. There are many more dwellings to be seen up close in the canyon just east of the magnificent Monument, although it is illegal to actually enter the canyon. Flagstaff Real Estate offer an area of escape for homeowners. Walnut Canyon was declared a national monument in 1915. It was transferred from the USDA Forest Service to the National Park Service in 1933. As with all historic areas administered by the National Park Service, the national monument was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
